Does mutation during meiosis cause genetic variation?

If there isn't any mutation during the joining of the gametes ( cells, egg, sperm etc.) then everyone in the world will be exactly the same and everyone would be prone to say if a disease came along, all of us would be infected but we aren't. So in short, yes it causes genetic variation which is a good thing!
